Treatment Steps

At The Consultation

You will have a short consultation to assess your suitability for IPL laser hair removal before you start treatments. On arrival, you will fill out two short forms about your medical history. You will then be taken into the consultation room to run through your forms. We will talk you through the treatments, results, sessions, your expectations and answer any questions you have. This also gives us the opportunity to look at your treatment area, skin tone, hair density and thickness. Provided you are suitable, we will perform a patch test on a small area to check how the skin and hair reacts to the treatment.

Preparing For IPL Laser Hair Removal

After your consultation, there are a few precautions you can take to ensure you get the best results. We advise you not to tan or use tanning products on the treatment area, as this increases the risk of the skin overheating.  To prepare the area, we ask that you shave/trim the area you want treated to 1-2mm (stubble). Longer hairs can be painful and can reduce the effectiveness of the treatment. It is also important that you do not remove the hair by any method other than shaving or trimming, as we need the root in place to permanently treat it.

During An IPL Laser Hair Removal Treatment Session

Handpiece1Provided your patch test was fine, you will be booked in for your first session. When you arrive, you will be asked to disrobe and lay on the couch. Your Dermo Men operator will run safety checks and prepare your skin by applying cooling gel to protect the skin. You will be given goggles to wear for eye safety and the treatment will begin. During the session, you will feel a prick similar to an elastic band flicking against the skin. This is when the bursts of light travel through the skin until they find the hair, which it then permanently denatures. Each flick does not treat an individual strand but it is treating the whole area. The flicks should not cause any discomfort, but if they do, let your Dermo Men operator know. See FAQs for more.

What To Do After An IPL Laser Hair Removal Session

Your IPL laser hair removal session requires no down time and you should be able to return to normal straight away. You may feel a little sunburnt and tender which this is entirely normal. These reactions will subside and the skin will settle down after a day or two. You may want to apply a cold compress and some Aloe Vera gel to cool and soothe the area.

ClippersTrimmingSlight pigment changes are also fairly common and should fade, although this can take a few months. If you notice anything out of the ordinary, such as blistering, intense swelling, infection, or if it is very painful, please contact us.

It is advised you avoid heat exposure for 24 hours; this can direct heat from the sun, body heat from working out at the gym, environment heat on a night out or even chemical agents when swimming in strong chlorinated water. You should also apply SPF 25+ on the treated areas between treatments.

Our advice is detailed in the aftercare sheet (also found under the client section here) which you should follow.

All in all, IPL laser hair removal is a safe, cost-effective method to permanently reduce unwanted hair. If you have any further questions, please call in or use the contact form to contact us.
